Solara · Bookmarking web app

Bookmarking for the mobile-first web

Everyone saves links; almost nobody revisits them. Solara is a mobile-first web app that treats bookmarks as a personal library — saved in one tap, resurfaced exactly when they matter.

Overview

Solara’s founders watched their own read-later lists grow into the thousands and realised the problem was never saving — it was returning. They brought Screenwright Studio in to design a bookmarking app that organises itself and nudges you back at the right moment.

I designed the full mobile-first experience over nine weeks: capture flows, auto-collections, search and the resurfacing digest, plus the marketing site that explains it all.

The challenge

Card-sorting sessions with eighteen heavy savers showed that manual folders always rot: people create them enthusiastically, then abandon them within weeks. Any system that demanded filing would inherit the same graveyard.

At the same time, the app had to earn a place on the home screen next to social feeds engineered for addiction. The answer wasn’t more notifications — it was one well-timed daily digest and a search experience that makes ten thousand saves feel small.

Approach

01

Map the graveyard

Audited participants’ existing bookmark folders to learn exactly where manual organising breaks down.

02

Design for zero filing

Auto-collections group saves by topic and intent, with manual curation as an option rather than a chore.

03

One-tap capture

The share-sheet flow was cut to a single confirmation, tested against real reading habits on commutes.

04

Resurface, don’t nag

A single daily digest, tuned in testing to feel like a gift rather than another unread badge.

Outcome

  • Save in one tapCapture testing showed the new share-sheet flow felt instant — testers saved twice as often during the trial week.
  • Collections that keep themselvesAuto-grouping held up across messy real-world libraries, with manual tweaks needed only rarely.
  • A digest worth openingThe daily resurface became the app’s signature moment — the reason testers said they’d keep Solara installed.
